Surgad

Surgad is fort situated near khamb village on the goa highway near nagothane at an height of 1507'. It is a very nice hike and best done as a monsoon hike. There is a beautiful waterfall a short distance from the fort and is a must see. This trek is a tough trek and it takes its toll on the legs. You should carry enough food, maybe two meals.
We started from Mulund by a private bus we(chakram hikers) had booked to go to the base village for the trek.Once we reached there we started the trek. This trek was done in the monsoons. From the village a quite muddy path which went through hedges and streams on flat land for a while. The fort of surgad can be seen stading impressively from here. Then the path rose up to a plateau towards the fort through thick jungle combined with rain all the time thru the trek. From here we had to find the way to a prominent gully seen on the front face of the fort. The route is quite tricky to find in the rains and it is best to hire a villager to take you up the fort. Basically u have to head towards the gully, be it on a path or not.The gully starts with a small rock patch with safe hand and foot holds.Climbing up the rock patch and gully we reach the plateau of the fort. The comletely vertical walls can be seen from a buruz. From the back side of the fort we can see the kundalika river.Moving ahead to see the fort we encounter a broken throne and a few water tanks with potable water. We find another buruz here.We walk on the fort walls till we start descending. After descending a 50 ft. we again encounter the fort wall but broken. We have to climb down these broken fort walls and then proceed. We have to be careful here as there are many chances for a broken hand or leg. Now,we had to go towards the waterfall. We climb another plateau and crossing it descend .Again we climb another plateau to a village near the fall. From the fort it takes at least 2 hours to reach here. Here we have our lunch then go to the waterfall. It is magnificent. There is  a temple nearby also.It is soothing to sit down in the flowing water above the fall or in one of the water pools here. After this the trek back to our bus.but this time we take another shorter route through dense forest to the base village. It is amazing that we didnt retrace any route during this trek. Then ....home..........back home.................This trek is a tough trek and it takes its toll on the legs. You should carry enough food
